การใช้ There is และ There are

There is / There are มีความหมายว่า "มี” ใช้เมื่อต้องการจะบอกว่า "มีอะไรอยู่ที่ไหน" เช่น

How many books are there on the shelf?
มีหนังสืออยู่บนชั้นกี่เล่ม
There is a book on the shelf.
มีหนังสืออยู่บนชั้น 1 เล่ม

How many apples are there on the tree?
มีแอ๊ปเปิ้ลอยู่บนต้นไม่กี่ผล
There is an apple on the tree.
มีแอ๊ปเปิ้ลอยู่บนต้นไม้ 1 ผล

How many students are there in the classroom?
มีนักเรียนอยู่ในห้องเรียนกี่คน
There are 8 students in the classroom.
มีนักเรียนอยู่ในห้องเรียน 8 คน

How many bears are there in the cage?
มีหมีอยู่ในกรงกี่ตัว
There are 2 bears in the case.
มีหมีอยู่ในกรง 2 ตัว

จากประโยคตัวอย่างข้างต้นจะพบว่า There is / There are ใช้แตกต่างกัน ดังนี้

1. There is ใช้นำหน้าคำนามเอกพจน์ หรือคำนามนับไม่ได้ เช่น

There is a book on the shelf.
มีหนังสืออยู่บนชั้น 1 เล่ม


There is an apple on the tree.
มีแอ๊ปเปิ้ลอยู่บนต้นไม้ 1 ผล

There is water in the glass.
มีน้ำอยู่ในแก้ว
** เนื่องจาก water เป็นคำนามที่นับไม่ได้

2. There are ใช้นำหน้าคำนามพหูพจน์ เช่น

There are 8 students in the classroom.
มีนักเรียนอยู่ในห้องเรียน 8 คน

There are 2 bears in the case.
มีหมีอยู่ในกรง 2 ตัว
